Nuptial Know-it-alls (excerpts)

Essential tips for making your big day a little marrier - straight from those in the bridal know
Surviving Snafus in Style
"Having a sense of humor can really help. I remember one bride whose elaborate designer cake was dropped - splat - on the sidewalk right before the ceremony. Instead of allowing it to ruin her day, she just laughed it off and ended up serving cheap cake and ice cream for dessert."
- Claudia Hanlin, Founder of the Wedding Library, a research boutique; guided brides through more than 385 weddings
Bridal Style Dos and Don'ts
"Don't wear a ridiculously long veil. One bride's marathon-length veil got stuck in a pew as she walked by, and her head jerked back. She had to backtrack up the aisle and untangle herself."
- Claudia Hanlin
"Don't wear a dress that makes you look like someone you're not. I remember one very muscular, athletic bride who wore this stuffy, elaborate, hand-beaded gown with lots of lace, jewelry and a tiara. It just didn't work. Know your style limits."
- Claudia Hanlin
Outdoor Dos and Don'ts
"Outdoor weddings are great, but they require extra preparation. I once attended a summer wedding on a lake that was ruined by the mosquitoes feasting on everyone's bare legs and arms during the ceremony. Provide outdoor necessities like repellent and Porta Potties big enough to accommodate fancy dressses. And in case of foul weather, be sure you have a backup plan, even if it means renting out a bargain-basement banquet hall. It's no fun swapping vows when there's a monsoon going on."

Pay Attention to Details
"Don't even bother with wedding favors it it's not something guests will care about. One couple gave away plastic swans as gifts -- and all their guests scoffed. If your gift has to be cheap, at least make it deliciously edible, like a gourmet chocolate bar."
- Claudia Hanlin
Prevent Potential Kid Catastrophes
"If you expect a lot of children at your wedding, give them something to do -- or you'll be sorry! One couple hired magicians, jugglers, even acrobats, who kept the children transfixed for hours. If you don't want to hire entertainers, at least provide paper and crayons. Or hire a baby-sitter for the ceremony."
