Make it Meaningful
Summer 2002
Small touches and new traditions to enhance your wedding day. There are plenty of smart, simple - and yes, stylish - ways to create the warmth you're looking for. Choose from this list of ideas from wedding pros...
Evoke memories of absent loved ones. For a wedding organized by planner Claudia Hanlin of N.Y.C.'s Wedding Library, the bride had a floral wreath made in memory of her grandmother. Attached to the wreath was a ribbon with a few lines from a poem that her grandmother had loved. The wreath was hung on a fountain at the ceremony's outdoor site.
Stage a grand finale. Many stylish weddings have featured a butterfly release or a fireworks display to mark the beginning of the couple's new life. Claudia Hanlin did something different, and more modestly priced, at a beach wedding on Cape Cod: As the ceremony ended, a huge bunch if balloons was released from behind a nearby bluff.
Provide drink recipes. At weddings where the bride and groom serve a signature drink, Claudia Hanlin likes to print the recipe on paper cocktail napkins for the guests to take home. "It's easy and inexpensive to do," she says ($25 for 100; The Wedding Library, 877-327-2824).
Remember the kid stuff. For weddings with lots of kids, Claudia Hanlin includes a personalized, toy-laden tote at each child's place setting. The individual touch makes kids feel special, and (age-appropriate) toys help minimize the squirm factor.
