WHEN it comes to mother-of-the-bride gowns, the Barbara Bush look is out.
Brightly colored suits are losing ground to separates such as skirts and beaded blouses in sophisticated soft shades like slate gray, taupe and olive green, says Claudia Hanlin, owner of the Wedding Library, a company that hooks brides up with wedding specialists and services.
Though brides' moms ought to dress up a bit more than others at the wedding, they don't have to go the ballgown route.
The only hard rule is that moms of the intended should shy away from black (too dour) and white (that's the bride's gig).
And they don't have to cover it all up, either.
"Women are dressing a bit more bare," says designer Josephine Sasso, whose mom-friendly wedding outfits will be shown during a trunk show on Wednesday at Hanlin's Upper East Side store.
"Women in their early to even late '40s often have great bodies that look wonderful in strapless evening tops worn with a stole or jacket."
Claudia Hanlin's Wedding Library is at 50 E. 81st St. Call (212) 327-0100 or log on to www.weddinglibrary.com for information about Josephine Sasso's May 10 trunk sale.
