Claudia Hanlin's Wedding Library

50 E 81st St between Park and Madison Aves, room 2A (327-0100). Subway: 6 to 77th St. Tue-Fri 11am-7pm; Sat, Sun 11am-5pm. Appointments encouraged.

The Wedding Library reflects owner Claudia Hanlin's idea that planning a wedding should be pleasurable. A self-described former "Type A bride", Hanlin has created a space where brides-to-be can do their comparative shopping in a pampered atmosphere. Here, they can look at portfolios featuring the work of florists such as Elizabeth Ryan and Wolfgang Thom, caterers such as Buitoni & Garetti, photographers such as Karen Hill, musicians such as Peter Duchin Orchestra, bakers such as Sylvia Weinstock, and other wedding-service providers. The former marketing executive has taken pains to make her unique library appeal to the senses; for instance, she'll seat you at a table covered with a silver-gray polka-dot tablecloth supplied by one vendor, and whisk the top off a hatbox to show you the sugar flowers that adorn the cakes baked by another. Soon the library, which is free to prospective brides, will host activities such as wedding-cake tastings and trunk shows featuring bridesmaids' dresses.
