Couples Do Variations on Marriage Themes
March 2003
From the subtle to the spectacular, themed nuptials are taking off faster than clothes on a wedding night, as couples turn their weddings into fairy tales, movie sets or, yes, homages to the St. Louis Rams.
Lea and Chip Stevens elegantly evoked fall at their Manchester, Vt., nuptials last autumn, embossing the invitations, programs and place cards with tiny acorns and oak leaves. At an 18th century inn, they graced their reception tables with harvest centerpieces of bundled eggplants, pears, apples and artichokes. "We wanted the wedding to be very intimate and warm," says Stevens, 27.
The autumnal theme "wasn't overbearing," says Claudia Hanlin, the wedding coordinator who helped plan the marriage. "Unless you were looking for it, you wouldn't know it was there." Hanlin says she always looks for some kind of subtle string to tie a wedding together.
